Owa, and Owaki#
The earliest accounts of the years before the Battle give the Water Protector as Owa. Later accounts settle on Owaki, and that is the form used here. Frequently asked questions
- Who was Owaki?
- Owaki was the Protector of Water of Okoto at the time of the Battle of the Mask Makers, one of six village elders charged with guarding the elemental regions of the island. Owaki was an ally of Ekimu and founded the Protector lineage that descended through centuries to Kivoda.
- What did Owaki do to prepare for the arrival of the Toa?
- Ekimu directed the Protectors to gather Elemental Crystals from the six Creatures to power the Golden Masks he was forging. Owaki travelled into the submerged depths of the Region of Water in search of Akida, Creature of Water, and returned with the crystal that would later power the Golden Mask of Water worn by Gali.
- What happened to Ekimu at the Battle of the Mask Makers?
- When Makuta completed the Mask of Ultimate Power and donned it at Capital City, Ekimu struck the mask from his brother's face with the Hammer of Power, and the resulting explosion sent Makuta and the whole of Capital City into the Shadow Realm. The same blast knocked Ekimu into a coma, and Owaki and the other surviving Protectors carried his body back to the City of the Mask Makers.
- Who succeeded Owaki as Protector of Water?
- The office of Protector of Water passed down within Owaki's family in keeping with the rule that bound each elemental office to a single hereditary line. The succession continued across the centuries until it reached Kivoda in the second age, who wore the same Elemental Water Protector Mask that Ekimu had given Owaki at the Festival of Masks.
- Why was Owaki sometimes called Owa?
- In earlier records of the period preceding the Battle of the Mask Makers, the Water Protector was identified as Owa, and the form Owaki was adopted in later accounts as the settled rendering of the name. The substitution applies to the same office and the same lineage, not to two distinct Protectors.
