The region was the source of much of the fresh water on which the other five elemental regions depended, and its waterways carried trade across the eastern half of the island.

Terrain and waters#

The Region of Water occupied the eastern stretch of OkotoOkotoOkoto is a world whose known inhabitants include the Toa, the Mask makers, and the Protectors. and was the wettest and most navigable of the island's six elemental regions. The terrain was shaped by the meeting of the western mountains and the eastern sea. Fast-flowing rivers descended from the high country, fed by a northern glacier that kept their flow constant through every season, and gathered in a series of great lakes where the ground levelled out. Below the lakes the rivers broadened into large deltas as they reached the eastern coast, and the deposits of those deltas had built up strings of fertile islands offshore that the Water TribeWater TribeA trading-focused desert tribe vulnerable to Bone Hunter raids and arena warfare on Bara Magna. had settled.

The southern boundary of the region met the Region of JungleRegion of JungleThe rainforest region of Okoto, home of the Jungle Tribe and the Protector of Jungle, ground over which Lewa sought the Golden Mask of Jungle and bonded with Uxar, and the coast from which the Labyrinth of Control rose offshore. along a margin of swamp. The swamp was the least mapped country in the Region of Water, much of it unexplored at the time of the ToaThe Toa of Okoto: The Six Heroes Summoned to Save the IslandThe six elemental heroes summoned by the Protectors of Okoto, who recovered the Golden Masks, woke Ekimu, fought the Skull Army, and twice banished Makuta to the Shadow Realm.'s arrival, and the Water TribeWater TribeA trading-focused desert tribe vulnerable to Bone Hunter raids and arena warfare on Bara Magna. treated it as a frontier rather than as settled ground. The combination of glacier, river, lake, delta, and coastal island gave the region a network of routes used for travel and trade with the other regions, but the same network made it hard to cross overland without local guidance.
