Frequently asked questions

What was the Battle of the Mask Makers?
The Battle of the Mask Makers was the cataclysm that ended the pre-Toa age of Okoto. It took place at Capital City in the Region of Stone, where Makuta of Okoto unveiled the Mask of Ultimate Power before a crowd, his brother Ekimu struck it from his face with the Hammer of Power, and the resulting discharge drew the city and its inhabitants into the Shadow Realm.
Why did Ekimu strike the Mask of Ultimate Power from Makuta?
Makuta had forged the Mask of Ultimate Power in secret, combining the energies of all six Okotan elements at once, a violation of the sacred law that no Kanohi could hold more than one element. When Makuta donned it before the crowd at Capital City, Ekimu used the Hammer of Power to strike it from his brother's face before the bond could complete.
What happened to Capital City during the battle?
When the Mask of Ultimate Power shattered, the release of its six-element energies opened a rift that drew the museum, the chief, the citizens, the buildings, and Makuta out of Okoto and into the Shadow Realm. The ground where the city had stood collapsed into a depression the Okotans called the Black Crater, later raised into the Black Volcano.
What happened to Ekimu after the battle?
Ekimu absorbed the brunt of the shock wave and, before losing consciousness, whispered the Prophecy of Heroes to the surviving Protectors. He fell into a coma that lasted centuries, was laid in a gold coffin at the City of the Mask Makers, and remained there until the Toa of the second age arrived to revive him.
What was the lasting effect of the Battle of the Mask Makers on Okoto?
The battle ended the joint office of Mask Maker, which had been the constitutional centre of Okoto for as long as the brothers had worked the forge together. The chief of Capital City was lost into the Shadow Realm with no successor named, and what had been a single polity became six regions held together by the surviving rite and the Prophecy of Heroes.
