Mask of Creation
the wooden key to the Rift
The Mask of Creation was a primordial wooden mask bound to the Rift of Creation, sought by Odin for the boundless knowledge it was said to grant. Its pieces were scattered across the Nine Realms, and Atreus restored it before destroying it during Ragnarok.
The Mask of Creation was an ancient and primordial artifact, a wooden mask marked with green that was magically bound to the Rift of Creation. Odin hunted its scattered pieces for the boundless knowledge it was said to grant, and in the end he turned to Atreus to complete it.
A mystery of unknown origin#
The mask's beginnings were a complete mystery. The Jotnar were not responsible for its making, though a few of them had seen it in their visions, and no one knew from where it had come. It was believed that the mask could allow its wearer to look into the secrets of Creation itself and grant infinite knowledge. Not all accepted this. Mimir thought it nothing more than a story and held that searching for its pieces was a waste of time.
Odin's obsession#
When Odin killed Ymir and shaped the world from his corpse, he accidentally tore a hole in the fabric of reality and beheld the Realm of Creation. By his own account, the loss of his right eye came from gazing into that realm, a sight that nearly drove him mad. Mimir recounted that Odin claimed to have heard a voice one night telling him of the mask and bidding him collect it and take control of his destiny. Afterward Odin took a ship to find it, journeying across Aegir's Burning Ocean and into the heart of the Silent Matron. The voyage cost him his entire crew, a sacrifice he deemed acceptable for what he found there: a mask with green markings that, when completed, was said to let its wearer look into Creation.
The restoration#
Wishing to use the mask to find all the answers he so desperately coveted, Odin decided to make use of Atreus, whose gift for understanding different writings and languages suited the task, for the pieces were scattered across the Nine Realms and only the single piece Odin held could find the others. Thanks to Atreus, the mask was fully restored. He was then forced to flee with it from a vengeful Thor. Odin nearly seized it after he killed Brok, but Kratos pinned it to the wall with Draupnir before the All-Father could escape with it.
Destruction during Ragnarok#
Because the mask had been restored, it caused the Rift of Creation to open during Ragnarok. Odin urged Atreus to use it to take a glimpse into the rift. To the All-Father's horror, Atreus refused and broke the mask in half, and the pieces were drawn into the Rift of Creation, sealing it up forever and denying Odin the knowledge he had pursued across the ages.
