Draupnir Spear

the wind weapon forged for Kratos

The Draupnir Spear was a wind-imbued spear forged for Kratos from the enchanted ring Draupnir, created by the Lady of the Forge and sanctified with a drop of his blood. Built to be the undoing of Heimdall, it could endlessly duplicate itself and command the wind.

By Joe Garratt

The Draupnir Spear was a weapon forged for Kratos during the lead-up to Ragnarok, taking its place in his arsenal alongside the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. Created from the enchanted ring Draupnir, it was made for a single purpose: to be the undoing of the foresighted Aesir god Heimdall, who was fated to kill Kratos' son Atreus. Imbued with the power of wind and the duplicating enchantment of the ring it was made from, the spear became central to Kratos' fight against Asgard.

Origin of the ring#

The Draupnir Spear was made from the ring Draupnir, an enchanted band of gold once possessed by Odin. The ring carried the power to multiply itself, dripping eight new rings of equal weight every ninth night. It had been forged long before by the dwarven brothers, and years before the events of the war the Huldra Brothers Brok and Sindri had reclaimed it from Odin. Its ceaseless duplication had filled a basement with a gargantuan volume of rings, which the brothers had been using as forging material ever since.

The forging#

When Kratos sought a weapon capable of killing Heimdall, who was fated to slay Atreus during Ragnarok, Brok and Sindri devised a plan around the ring. Rather than use it directly, they proposed bringing it to the Lady of the Forge. Sindri retrieved the ring from the basement, and Brok insisted on accompanying Kratos to the Lady's forge in Svartalfheim, over his brother's reluctance.

On the journey Brok carried a disembodied spearhead as a component of the weapon, and later gathered the sound of the wind blowing through the realm as another, advising that one should appreciate the nature of a thing rather than its form. Descending into a lake, Kratos and Brok met the Lady, a mermaid smith. She accepted the components and, with her mystical powers, created the Draupnir Spear, then used a drop of Kratos' godly blood to sanctify it as a tool fit for him alone.

Powers#

Attuned to the element of wind and carrying the duplicating nature of the ring it was made from, the spear held several distinct powers. It could be thrown an endless number of times, the ring conjuring a new spear with every throw. The thrown and embedded copies could be detonated at once by slamming the butt of the spear into the ground, a technique known as Draupnir's Call. Its wind magic could draw enemies in before blasting them back, casting them over cliffs or into pools of lava. The spear could also siphon an enemy's elemental power for a short time and summon cyclones. When not in Kratos' hand the weapon vanished into nothingness, the first weapon of his journeys whose disappearance was openly acknowledged.

Use against Asgard#

The spear soon became an integral part of Kratos' arsenal. It fulfilled its intended purpose when Kratos and Freya were ambushed by Heimdall in Vanaheim during their effort to rescue her brother Freyr. The spear's command of the wind and its endless duplication allowed Kratos to overwhelm the god's foresight several times and ultimately bring about Heimdall's death, sparing Atreus from his fate, though it deepened the conflict with Asgard.

Later, when Odin in disguise revealed himself by fatally stabbing Brok and tried to escape with the Mask of Creation, Kratos hurled the spear and pinned it to the wall, denying Odin the mask. During the climactic battle of Ragnarok, Kratos used the spear to fight through Odin's army of einherjar to breach the walls of Asgard, and wielded it in his second battle against Thor. In his final stand against Odin, the Draupnir Spear stood as the antithesis of the All-Father's own spear Gungnir, the shining golden weapon against the pale one. After the fall of Asgard, Kratos continued to use the spear to heal the realms and forge a new path as a benevolent god.

The path of the spear#

The spear remained in Kratos' possession when he was drawn into the blessed realm of Valhalla by the true Tyr, who sought to help him confront his past and accept a place on Freya's inter-realm council. On that journey Kratos could follow the path of the spear, deepening its powers as it aided him alongside his other weapons.
