What Happened to Kratos After Ragnarök?
Kratos survived Ragnarök, let Atreus go, and stayed in Midgard to help Freya and Mimir rebuild the Nine Realms. In the Valhalla epilogue he takes up the title God of War again, this time as a god of hope. Here is where his story stands.
Kratos survived Ragnarök. After the fall of Asgard he let his son Atreus leave to find the scattered giants, and stayed in Midgard to rebuild the Nine Realms with Freya and Mimir. In the Valhalla epilogue he faces his Greek past and agrees to be God of War again, this time as a god of hope. (God of War Ragnarök; God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
He didn't die#
The 2018 game ends with Kratos spotting a hidden panel in the giants' mural that seems to show Atreus holding his dying father. He keeps it to himself, and he goes into Ragnarök sure he won't come out. (God of War (2018); God of War Ragnarök)
The war goes his way. Kratos leads the realms against Asgard, beats Thor and spares him, and with Atreus and Freya brings down Odin. Asgard burns and they escape. The full story is in the Ragnarök ending explained. (God of War Ragnarök)
Afterwards, Angrboda shows them a painting by Faye revealing that she had destroyed part of the giants' prophecy so her husband and son could make their own choices. Behind it Kratos finds one more mural. It shows him alive after Ragnarök, revered by the people of the realms. He had spent two games getting ready to die, and the future he finds is one where he leads. (God of War Ragnarök)
Letting Atreus go#
Atreus tells his father that he wants to leave the Nine Realms and look for the giants who scattered, whose souls he carries. It's the hardest thing Kratos is asked in the whole saga, and he says yes. He hugs his son and gives his blessing, and Atreus leaves as Loki, the name his mother chose for him. The story behind that name is in why Atreus is called Loki. (God of War Ragnarök)
The game doesn't say where Atreus goes, or whether he finds any giants. (God of War Ragnarök)
Valhalla: becoming God of War again#
The free Valhalla epilogue picks up soon after. With the old order gone, Freya asks Kratos to sit on her council as its God of War. He keeps putting off an answer, because the title stands for everything he tried to leave behind in Greece. (God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
An unsigned letter brings him and Mimir to Valhalla, which tests anyone who enters using their own memories. Kratos's memories drag him back to Greece again and again. At the summit he meets the real Tyr, alive after years as Odin's prisoner, who questions him about Ares, Helios and Pandora and makes him own those memories instead of burying them. (God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
At the end, Kratos opens a door and finds his younger self, the pale, furious Ghost of Sparta, on the throne of the God of War. He tells him what he got wrong, but he also owns the sacrifice that younger man made to give the world hope. Then he takes the throne himself and agrees to join Freya's council as a God of War who can also be a god of hope. (God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
Where his story stands now#
That is the last thing that happens to Kratos in story order so far. Valhalla leaves open what Freya's council will do, where Atreus is, and whether the mural of Kratos as a beloved leader comes true. (God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)
The next main game moves the focus to his wife. God of War Laufey stars Faye, who wakes after her funeral in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods of many mythologies meet, and finds that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. (First look at God of War Laufey)
It's due on PlayStation 5 on 16 February 2027. Sony hasn't said how much Kratos himself will appear. (God of War Laufey pre-orders)

Why Is Atreus Called Loki? The Name Explained
Atreus is called Loki because that was the name his mother Faye wanted for him, and the name the giants gave him in their prophecy. Here is how God of War reveals it, why Kratos called him Atreus instead, and what the name means for Ragnarök.

Angrboda: the last giantess of Ironwood
Angrboda grew up almost alone in Ironwood, painting the prophecy of Ragnarok. She gave Atreus the soul marbles of the lost Giants and made him their keeper.

Atreus (Loki): Kratos's Son and the Truth of His Name
Atreus was the son of Kratos and the Jotunn Faye, born in Midgard and given the hidden name Loki. Across two great journeys he grew from a sickly boy into the prophesied champion of the Giants, the god of mischief whose fate was bound to Ragnarok.

Faye: Laufey the Just, mother of Atreus
Faye was the Jotunn Laufey, wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus. Her foresight showed her own death, so she planned the route her ashes would take.

Kratos
Kratos was the demigod son of Zeus who rose from a Spartan general to the Greek God of War, destroyed the pantheon of Olympus in a quest for vengeance, and then began again in the Norse realms as a father seeking to leave his bloody past behind.

Mimir
Mimir was a Celtic fae who rose to become Odin's advisor and the ambassador of the Aesir before the All-Father imprisoned him for over a century. Freed and reanimated as a disembodied head by Kratos and Atreus, he became their guide, conscience, and friend across the Nine Realms.
