Adrien Victus: the general who became Primarch on a moon of Palaven

Adrien Victus was a turian general fighting on Menae in 2186 when Primarch Fedorian's shuttle was shot down and the succession rules made him Primarch of Palaven. He was out of contact and did not know it yet.

Adrien Victus was a turian general, a veteran of the First Contact War, and in 2186 the officer leading the defence of Menae, one of Palaven's moons, against the Reapers. Watching his homeworld burn from that moon, he said the strategist in him admired the brutality of it while the turian in him knew he was watching fifteen thousand years of his own civilisation being destroyed. Then Primarch Fedorian's shuttle was shot down, and the Hierarchy's succession rules made Victus his replacement without anybody being able to tell him.

TL;DR

Victus spent most of his life in the turian military and was extremely popular with the soldiers under him. The rest of the officer corps was less enthusiastic, because his tactics were clever, unorthodox and ethically awkward: on Taetrus in 2185 he held his own forces back and let a salarian spy ring and turian separatists exhaust each other before moving in, and took the victory without losing anyone. When Fedorian died over Menae, Victus became Primarch of Palaven and had to be found by Shepard and talked into leaving the front. He chaired the war summit that followed, agreed to help Earth on the condition that krogan support relieved Palaven, and later asked Shepard for help with a classified turian operation on Tuchanka commanded by his own son. That mission is optional, and what it uncovers is a bomb the turians buried under a populated krogan valley during the Krogan Rebellions.

Who is Primarch Victus?#

Adrien Victus was a career turian officer who became Primarch of Palaven in the middle of the Reaper invasion, purely because he was next in the order of succession when Fedorian was killed.

His reputation before that was split. His men loved him, and his record was strong. His fellow officers disliked how he won. His tactics were inventive and they raised ethical questions the turian military did not enjoy answering, and the war on Taetrus in 2185 is the example everyone cites: Victus held his forces out of the fighting, let a salarian spy ring and turian separatists grind each other down, and then moved in and claimed the victory without a single casualty of his own.

By 2186 he was on Menae trying to hold Reaper forces off a moon while Palaven burned below him. General Corinthus pointed Commander Shepard at his position, because the war summit needed a turian who could speak for the Hierarchy and Victus was now that turian.

He did not want it. He said he was no politician and would rather die alongside his men, and what changed his mind was working out that refusing the diplomatic job put Palaven and everything past it at risk. He left with Shepard.

The summit#

As Primarch, Victus took charge of the war summit with the humans, salarians and krogan. He agreed to help Earth, with a condition attached: krogan support to relieve Palaven had to come first, and Shepard had to secure it.

Talk to him afterwards and he is cautiously hopeful about curing the genophage and about a turian and krogan alliance actually working. He also notes where he is standing while he says it. Turians and humans fought each other at first contact and are now allies holding a diplomatic meeting aboard the Normandy SR-2, a ship the two species built together.

He does not dismiss Dalatrass Linron's warnings about krogan expansion once the genophage is lifted. His answer is that he would rather have a grateful ally than an angry enemy. He also admits, plainly, that he is afraid of being the last primarch Palaven ever has.

Tuchanka#

After the krogan female is recovered from the STG base on Sur'Kesh, Victus asks Shepard to help rescue a top-secret turian team whose ship has crashed on Tuchanka. He will not say what the team was doing. It is classified, he says, and it matters to the whole galaxy, and the only detail he gives up is that the commanding officer is his son, Lieutenant Tarquin Victus.

Helping is the player's choice. Take the mission and Tarquin explains it: Cerberus is trying to detonate a bomb in the Kelphic Valley, a heavily populated krogan region. The bomb is a leftover from the Krogan Rebellions, planted by the turians as insurance against the krogan restarting the war and never disclosed to them. That is what Victus could not say out loud with krogan in the room.

Tarquin dies making sure the bomb is defused. His father, who had kept a secret precisely to avoid this kind of damage, learns from it that secrets get people killed. Victus mourns him and is also openly proud of him, and says the sacrifice will be recorded in the histories of the 9th Platoon.

The rest of the war#

With the genophage cured, Victus hands Garrus Vakarian the job of coordinating every turian contribution to the weapon project the allied species are building, and he promises Shepard that the turians will be there for Earth when the moment comes.

After the Cerberus attack on the Citadel he emails Shepard asking the Commander to look into Din Korlack, a volus ambassador suspected of working with Cerberus. Pursuing it is optional.

If he survives to the final push on Earth, and the conditions are right for a conversation, he makes the point he has been building toward the whole war. Humans came for Palaven in its worst hour. The turians will be there for the humans, and he says so with pride.
