Jacobs Installation

the Confederate weapons facility

The Jacobs Installation was a Confederate facility on Mar Sara where the Terran Confederacy experimented on captured zerg and stored secret weapons data. A raid led by Jim Raynor seized that data, which the Sons of Korhal used to build the psi emitter.

By Joe Garratt

The Jacobs Installation was a Terran Confederacy facility on the world of Mar Sara. Behind its walls the Confederacy held captive zerg specimens and concealed secret military technology, making it a target during the opening campaign of the Great War.

The Confederate facility#

The Confederacy used the Jacobs Installation to experiment with captured zerg specimens, intending to turn the creatures against its rivals, and the facility doubled as a repository for secret military technology. The site was defended by Alpha Squadron, the Confederate military unit operating in the Sara system.

The raid#

In 2499, as Chau Sara had already been incinerated and Mar Sara faced the same fate, the Sons of Korhal prepared to evacuate the world. Before leaving, Arcturus Mengsk resolved to steal the weapons designs concealed in the installation, believing secret Confederate military technology lay within. He selected the recently rescued Jim Raynor to lead a strike force of marines and firebats into the facility. The team fought its way inside, killing Alpha Squadron soldiers and captive zerg held in pens, and retrieved a data disk, but the intrusion prompted the installation's self-destruct sequence, forcing the raiders to escape shortly before the facility was destroyed.

The psi emitter and aftermath#

The data discs recovered from the Jacobs Installation proved even more valuable than Mengsk had hoped. Once decoded, they contained the designs for a Transplanar Psionic Waveform Emitter, or psi emitter, a device capable of attracting zerg from a great distance. The Sons of Korhal built such a device from the stolen plans and deployed it during the fall of Antiga Prime and again at Tarsonis, where it lured the Swarm against the Confederacy. The ruined installation remained a draw for fortune hunters in later years, including a thor pilot named Sandin Forst, who recovered valuable ardeon crystals from the wreckage but was infected by zerg spores bonded to them.
