Origin and classification#

KanokaKanoka DisksMetru Nui's most versatile artifact: flying disks equally at home in sport, combat, and crafting. disks were standard equipment across Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive.. Each disk was forged from purified ProtodermisProtodermisThe engineered substance building the Matoran Universe, protodermis exists in countless refined states from mundane metal to diamond-hard crystal to the destruction-or-transformation force of energized form., stamped with the symbol of its home MetruMetruIn the Matoran language a metru was a single district of Metru Nui; the city was divided into six such districts, one for each element, and the term covered both the place and the elemental community that lived in it., and engraved with a three-digit Kanoka Code. The first digit recorded the district of manufacture. The second recorded one of eight standard powers, ranging from Reconstitute at Random through Teleport. The third recorded the disk's power level, on a scale that ran from one to eight for ordinary disks.

Six disks existed at a power level of nine. They were classified separately as Great Kanoka, or Great Disks. No other power-nine Kanoka had ever been produced or recovered. Their origin was not recorded as a single forging event in the canonical sources. Each was simply present in its district, lodged in terrain or in a structure, treated by the local MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. as a relic of unknown manufacture rather than as standard inventory.

The disks shared the standard Kanoka properties of their districts of origin. Frequently asked questions

What were the Great Disks?
The Great Disks were the six legendary Kanoka of Metru Nui, each produced at the maximum power level of nine, with one hidden in each of the city's six districts. They were the only known disks of their power tier in the Matoran Universe and were classified separately as Great Kanoka.
Who found the locations of the six Great Disks?
Six Matoran, one per Metru, independently learned where each disk could be found: Nuhrii of Ta-Metru, Ahkmou of Po-Metru, Vhisola of Ga-Metru, Tehutti of Onu-Metru, Ehrye of Ko-Metru, and Orkahm of Le-Metru. They did not form an organised group and were sometimes in active competition with one another.
How did the Toa Metru use the Great Disks against the Morbuzakh?
After gathering all six disks, the Toa Metru learned the Morbuzakh was controlled by a central King Root located in the Great Furnace. They launched the six Great Disks in combination to form an energy bubble around the King Root, isolating it from its vine network, which killed the creature and disintegrated the vines throughout the city.
What happened to the Great Disks after the Morbuzakh was defeated?
Vakama fused the six Great Disks together during the evacuation of Metru Nui, first into a single Disk of Time and then into the Kanohi Vahi, the Legendary Mask of Time. The fusion was one-way, and the six individual disks ceased to exist as separate objects from that point onward.
Why were the Great Disks needed to forge the Mask of Time?
Vakama had previously attempted to forge a Mask of Time from ordinary Kanoka while still a Matoran mask-maker, at Teridax's order, and the attempt failed because only power-nine disks could produce a Legendary Kanohi. The Vahi became the only Legendary Kanohi of Matoran craftsmanship rather than ancient origin.
