The Throwing Disks of Metru Nui

The protodermis throwing disks of Metru Nui, used in Akilini sport, in Matoran self-defence, in Vahki weaponry, in mask-making, and as the signature armament of the Toa Metru.

Composition and the Kanoka Code#

Every Kanoka was a single disc of purified protodermisProtodermisThe engineered substance building the Matoran Universe, protodermis exists in countless refined states from mundane metal to diamond-hard crystal to the destruction-or-transformation force of energized form. forged in a mold and stamped on the rim with the symbol of its metru of origin. Three digits engraved on the disk encoded its operational properties: the metru of origin, the basic power locked in by the forging, and the power level on a nine-point scale.

The first digit assigned each metru a flight characteristic intrinsic to its disks. Ta-MetruTa-MetruThe fire district where Ta-Matoran perfected their craft and powered Metru Nui's industry for thousands of years. disks knocked obstacles out of their flight path on impact, although they could not knock Po-MetruPo-MetruMetru Nui's Stone District, home to carvers whose work defined the city and site of an ancient conflict that threatened to divide it. disks. The second digit identified one of the eight basic powers. Reconstitute at Random scrambled molecules and forced a temporary recomposition in randomised form. Freeze encased the target in ice. Weaken reduced structural integrity. Remove Poison neutralised any poison present. Enlarge and Shrink adjusted size. Regenerate repaired inanimate damage. Teleport relocated the target to a randomised destination. Combination disks merged the base powers, the most famous being the Disk of Time, code 199, which carried the only formally numbered ninth basic power.

The third digit measured effective strength. The ceiling for ordinary MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body.-made disks was level 8. Only six disks at level 9 had ever existed.

Production and the role of the metru#

Ta-MetruTa-MetruThe fire district where Ta-Matoran perfected their craft and powered Metru Nui's industry for thousands of years. was the city's primary forge district and produced the largest share of disks across all categories. The disks fed directly into the metru's mask-making industry, which depended on raw Kanoka of sufficient quality to forge a KanohiKanohiMasks that grant powers and sustain life, they're the most vital artifact in the Matoran Universe. without the power leeching out during the working. Mask-makers such as VakamaVakamaA Ta-Metru maskmaker transformed into the Toa Metru of Fire, leader of his team through the Visorak war, and Turaga of Ta-Koro for a thousand years. operated forges in the metru and selected disks from the production yards by code, by AkiliniAkiliniAkilini was the principal sport of Metru Nui, played with Kanoka disks on the arena floor of the Coliseum and serving as both civic spectacle and the means by which the worth of a freshly forged disk was tested before mask-making. performance, and by direct inspection.

The other five metru produced disks suited to local industry, each specialised in the flight characteristic of its district. Po-MetruPo-MetruMetru Nui's Stone District, home to carvers whose work defined the city and site of an ancient conflict that threatened to divide it. operated a major disk workshop attached to its carving trades, and the Po-MatoranPo-MatoranThe Stone-element Matoran of Po-Metru and Po-Koro, carvers and quarry workers, the most athletic of the Matoran types and the population behind the Kohlii and Akilini circuits. Compound disks and infrastructure use#

The eight basic powers could be combined through specialised forging into compound disks whose effects merged the parent properties. The craft tables in Ta-MetruTa-MetruThe fire district where Ta-Matoran perfected their craft and powered Metru Nui's industry for thousands of years. used compound formulas throughout the standard KanohiKanohiMasks that grant powers and sustain life, they're the most vital artifact in the Matoran Universe. range: the Mask of Speed from Teleport merged with Reconstitute at Random; the Mask of Shielding from Growth and Regeneration; the Mask of Water Breathing from Regeneration, Shrink, and Remove Poison; the Mask of X-Ray Vision from Regeneration and Teleport; the Mask of Concealment from Enlarge, Shrink, and Freeze; the Mask of Mind Control from Freeze and Weaken.

Disks were also embedded in the city's built infrastructure. Regeneration disks were installed in the structural fabric of buildings so that minor damage repaired automatically. Levitation and Increase Weight disks operated in coordinated pairs to drive airship ascent and descent, and the Air Transit district of Le-MetruLe-MetruThe teal district where Le-Matoran managed everything that moved through Metru Nui, from chutes to airships. relied on the disk-pair principle for the bulk of its lift operations.

Frequently asked questions

What are Kanoka disks in BIONICLE?
Kanoka disks were the powered, frisbee-shaped throwing disks of Metru Nui, used as small arms and sporting equipment by the Matoran population and as the precursor material from which every Kanohi in the city was forged. Each disk was a forged disc of refined protodermis, and every Matoran in the city carried at least one.
What does the Kanoka Code mean?
Each Kanoka was stamped with a three-digit code: the first digit gave the metru of manufacture and its flight characteristic, the second digit gave the basic power, and the third digit gave the power level on a nine-point scale. The eight basic powers were Reconstitute at Random, Freeze, Weaken, Remove Poison, Enlarge, Shrink, Regenerate, and Teleport.
How were Kanoka disks used to make Kanohi masks?
A disk's power level determined what kind of mask it could produce: levels 1 through 6 produced powerless Matoran masks, level 7 produced Noble masks, and level 8 produced Great masks. Compound disks merged base powers to forge masks across the standard Kanohi range, and freshly forged disks were trial-tested in Akilini play to decide whether they were strong enough for mask-grade material.
What were the six Great Kanoka Disks?
Six Kanoka had been forged at power level 9, one produced in each metru and each hidden in a location characteristic of that metru, tied to a specific Matoran holder. Their assembled power was enough to destroy the Morbuzakh's King Root, and Vakama later fused all six into the Disk of Time, code 199, which he forged into the Vahi, the Mask of Time.
How did the Vahki use Kanoka disks?
Every Vahki frame produced by Nuparu carried a built-in Kanoka launcher as standard armament, firing disks drawn from the production line of the metru the model was assigned to. This integration was the largest single deployment of disk-fired weaponry in Metru Nui's history.
