Toa of Psionics

Orde, Varian, and the All-Female Rule

The first Toa of Psionics tried to calm a group of Zyglak with telepathy and made them more savage instead. Every Psionics Toa after Orde was made female in response.

What the element does#

Psionics gave a Toa near-perfect command over psychic energy. The standard kit was broader than most elements: psychic blasts as a direct attack, telekinesis for moving objects without contact, telepathy for reading and projecting thoughts, and mind control over other beings. Most elemental powers capped at one or two of those modes. Psionics covered all of them.

The defensive side was unusual. Toa of Psionics were naturally shielded from outside mental influence, which made Psionics-on-Psionics encounters strange, with both sides carrying built-in defense, and made them functionally immune to most other psychic attacks in the universe. The tradeoff was the absorption gap. Psionics was present in the minds of every sentient being a Toa of Psionics encountered, but they could not absorb psionic energy back into themselves to refuel. Reserves drained and did not refill on their own, the same problem the Toa of GravityToa of GravityA purple-armored Ba-Matoran lineage with a handful of named feats and a death toll that says more about Lariska than it does about the element itself. and the Toa of MagnetismToa of MagnetismToa of Magnetism were the rare Toa drawn from Fa-Matoran stock, wielding magnetic force at scales that let them rip Makuta armour apart and made them targets of a Brotherhood-led purge across the Matoran Universe. shared.

Frequently asked questions

What powers did a Toa of Psionics have?
A Toa of Psionics had near-perfect command over psychic energy, including psychic blasts, telekinesis, telepathy, and mind control over other beings. They were also naturally shielded from outside mental influence, which made them functionally immune to most other psychic attacks.
Why are all Toa of Psionics female except Orde?
Orde, the first Toa of Psionics, was sent to calm a group of Zyglak using telepathy, but his aggressive mind made them more savage instead. The Great Beings concluded the problem was temperamental and decided every subsequent Ce-Matoran, Toa, and Turaga of Psionics would be created female on the belief that females would be gentler.
Who is Orde in Bionicle?
Orde was the first Toa of Psionics, created roughly 100,000 years ago and assembled directly as a Toa rather than transformed from a Matoran. He was the only male in the Psionics lineage and appeared in The Yesterday Quest as part of a team recruited to find the Great Beings.
What happened to Varian?
Varian, the second named Toa of Psionics, was ambushed by Dark Hunters who had used the shapeshifter Triglax posing as a Toa of Sonics named Grey. She was captured and placed in a stasis tube as a trophy in the Shadowed One's chamber on Odina, where she remained for the rest of the Matoran Universe's existence.
Was Chiara a Toa of Psionics?
No. Chiara was often miscategorized as Psionics but was canonically a Vo-Matoran, a Toa of Lightning. In The Yesterday Quest she threw bolts of electricity at Orde and at the Vorox.
