The Tarot in Cyberpunk 2077: Misty's Cards and the Endings

Cyberpunk 2077 hides tarot murals across Night City, Misty reads V's cards, and every ending is named after one: The Devil, The Star, The Sun, Temperance, The Tower and Phantom Liberty's four Kings. Here's where the cards are, what each one means in the game, and what Misty draws for V at the end.

By Joe Garratt

The tarot in Cyberpunk 2077 is a thread that runs from the first act to the credits. Murals of the 22 Major Arcana cards are painted around Night City and the Badlands, each near a place that matters to V's story. Misty Olszewski, a tarot reader and the girlfriend of Jackie Welles, interprets them. The game's endings are named after cards too: The Devil, The Star, The Sun and Temperance in the base game, plus The Tower and the four Kings of Phantom Liberty. This guide covers where the cards are, what each ending's card means in context, and what Misty draws for V at the end. Spoilers for every ending. (Cyberpunk 2077; Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)

Misty and her readings#

Misty runs Misty's Esoterica, a shop of incense, charms and cards on a street in Watson, standing in front of the clinic of the ripperdoc Viktor Vektor. She is Jackie's girlfriend and a friend to V, and after the heist she is one of the people who look after V. All through the search for a cure, V can ask her for a reading. (Cyberpunk 2077)

She is also there at the very end. The roof of her shop is where V sits with Johnny in Nocturne Op55N1 and chooses who to trust, which is why the mural of The World is painted up there. On the route with the Aldecaldos, Misty lays out one last spread before V leaves: The Fool and a reversed Magician for who V and Johnny are now, The Lovers for V's future, and The Moon, the card of mystery, for Johnny's. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Nocturne Op55N1")

The tarot graffiti: where the cards are#

The murals appear in Act 2, after Johnny's engram has started to bleed into V's mind. Most sit near a place where something important happens to V. Twenty of them count for the job Fool on the Hill. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Fool on the Hill")

  • The Fool is outside V's apartment, where V's story starts. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The Emperor is by Konpeki Plaza, where Yorinobu Arasaka kills his father. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The High Priestess is at Goro Takemura's hideout, where V meets Hanako Arasaka. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The Lovers is on the back of the screen at the drive-in where Johnny takes Rogue on their date in Blistering Love. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The Hermit is near the church in Pacifica where V speaks to Alt Cunningham. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The Hanged Man, the card of sacrifice, is by Johnny Silverhand's grave in the oil fields. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • Death is near Embers, where the last act begins. (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • The Tower is at the Arasaka memorial beside Arasaka Tower. (Cyberpunk 2077)

Some cards wait at the places the endings will go: The Star by the solar arrays where V leaves with the Aldecaldos, The Sun under V's penthouse, Temperance near the columbarium Johnny visits in his ending, and The Moon near the Arasaka estate. Two are left out of the job. Judgement turns up during the assault on Arasaka Tower on the routes with Rogue, the Aldecaldos or Johnny alone. The Devil appears only on the Arasaka route, in Where is My Mind?, where V also dreams of the card on the orbital station. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Where is My Mind?")

Bring Misty all twenty and she talks V through the Fool's road. It leads to The World, she says, and there are four paths to it, the cards that name the four main endings. V answers bitterly that they could just die instead, a hint at the suicide ending. Misty gives V her dreamcatcher, which then hangs over V's bed. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Fool on the Hill")

The endings and what each card means#

Every main ending carries a card's name, and the in-game tarot journal gives each card a meaning. In the credits of most endings, Misty sends V a three-card reading. (Cyberpunk 2077)

The Devil#

The journal makes The Devil the card of craving and addiction, a figure who brings fame and fortune at the price of losing yourself, and who lures people into traps while always leaving them a choice. That is the Arasaka ending: V takes Arasaka's help, ends up in its orbital station, and is offered a place in Mikoshi or a trip home to die. Misty draws The Fool, The Moon and The High Priestess, calls them bad cards, and tells V to keep a close eye on their new friends. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Where is My Mind?")

The Star#

The Star is the card of hope in the journal, a light in the darkest night that shows the way home. V leaves Night City with Panam Palmer and the Aldecaldos, still dying but with a family. Misty's reading is The Chariot, The Lovers and The Sun, and she sees a good life ahead for V in the Badlands. (Cyberpunk 2077, "All Along the Watchtower")

The Sun#

The Sun stands for success, freedom, renewal and truth. V becomes the most famous merc in the city, owns the Afterlife, and flies off for one last job with months to live. Misty draws Strength, The Emperor and The World, and says the world will hear about V. (Cyberpunk 2077, "Path of Glory")

Temperance#

Temperance is the card of balance and self-restraint, of growing into maturity and finding inner peace. V gives Johnny the body and crosses the Blackwall, and Johnny leaves Night City as a better man than he was. The mural fits: where the classic card shows liquid poured between two cups, the game's version has two figures joined by a tube, sharing one bloodstream. Misty draws The Hanged Man, The Magician and The Star and says the cards point to something like death, but not quite. (Cyberpunk 2077, "New Dawn Fades")

The Tower#

The journal calls The Tower an omen of radical change, chaos and destruction, with an old order lying under the ruins and a new one rising from them. In Phantom Liberty's ending, the NUSA cures V and the surgery takes away the merc's life, two years and most of V's friends. There is no reading. Misty has given up her shop and is leaving for Poland, and she says she couldn't help other people find balance once she had lost her own. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, "Things Done Changed")

The suicide ending has no card and no reading, because V's fate is already settled. The secret ending, (Don't Fear) The Reaper, takes the name of its route and finishes as The Sun or Temperance. (Cyberpunk 2077)

Phantom Liberty's four Kings#

Phantom Liberty adds four more murals in Dogtown, all from the Minor Arcana, for the job Tomorrow Never Knows. Each sits near where V first met one of the expansion's leads: the King of Cups near the gate where V first meets Songbird, the King of Pentacles at the hideout where V protects President Rosalind Myers, the King of Wands at Tranquil Terrace where V meets Solomon Reed, and the King of Swords outside The Moth, where V meets Alex Xenakis. Find all four and Misty will read them. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, "Tomorrow Never Knows")

The expansion's four endings take these names. The journal entries hint at what each one means, though matching them to people is our reading, not the game's. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)

  • King of Wands is a planner who inspires friends but will break oaths and cross any line to win. That fits the ending where Songbird gets to the Moon. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
  • King of Swords has logic, conviction and a precise moral compass, and never stops hunting an enemy. That is Reed, who takes Songbird home. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
  • King of Cups is driven by feeling and compassion. That fits V granting Songbird's wish to die. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)
  • King of Pentacles is imperious and pragmatic, attached to what they own. That is Myers, who keeps Songbird as her netrunner on a leash. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty)

The Phantom Liberty endings guide covers each one in full, and the base-game endings are in the Cyberpunk 2077 endings guide. (Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty; Cyberpunk 2077)

The cards on the tabletop#

The tarot crossed back to the tabletop game. In 2021 R. Talsorian Games released Night City Tarot, a free add-on for Cyberpunk RED that uses the card art from Cyberpunk 2077. Drawing a card replaces a normal critical injury with something worse and less predictable. (Cyberpunk RED DLC: Night City Tarot (take 2!))
