Finn
the stormtrooper who defected
Finn was a First Order stormtrooper, designated FN-2187, who refused to fire on innocents and deserted to join the Resistance. He fought through the war against the First Order alongside Rey and Poe Dameron, ending it as a co-general.
Finn was a human man who served the First Order as a stormtrooper under the designation FN-2187 before deserting to join the Resistance during the war against the First Order. Taken as a child and raised to be a soldier, he broke with his conditioning when ordered to fire on civilians and fled, helping the captured pilot Poe Dameron escape and earning from him the name Finn. He went on to fight beside Rey and the Resistance across the conflict, rising by its end to share command of the movement.
Life in the First Order#
Taken from his family as a child, Finn was raised by the First Order as a stormtrooper and given the designation FN-2187. He was trained under the command of Captain Phasma and assigned to duties that included sanitation work aboard Starkiller Base. Though conditioned for obedience, he proved unable to fully suppress his conscience.
Defection#
Finn's break with the First Order came during an assault on the village of Tuanul on Jakku, home to members of the Church of the Force. In the fighting his comrade FN-2003 was killed and smeared blood across Finn's helmet, an event that shook him deeply. When Kylo Ren ordered the surviving villagers executed, Finn refused to fire, a defiance Ren noted. Determined to escape, he freed the captured Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, and the two stole a TIE fighter. Dameron gave him the name Finn before they were shot down over Jakku. Believing Dameron dead, Finn discarded his armor and made his way to Niima Outpost, intending to carry on the pilot's mission to recover the droid BB-8.
The war against the First Order#
On Jakku, Finn fell in with Rey and BB-8 and fled the planet aboard the Millennium Falcon. After the Battle of Takodana, where Rey was captured, Finn joined Han Solo and Chewbacca in an assault on Starkiller Base, drawing on his knowledge of the station's thermal oscillator to help plan the attack. His true aim was to rescue Rey. After witnessing Ren murder his own father, Finn took up the Skywalker lightsaber and challenged Ren, holding his own briefly despite having no training before being gravely wounded. Rey carried him to safety, and he was left in a coma at the Resistance base.
Recovering, Finn served the Resistance through the retreat that followed the Battle of Crait, undertaking a covert mission with the mechanic Rose Tico and growing close to her. Over the following year he fought the First Order across countless worlds alongside Poe Dameron, Rey, and Chewbacca.
Exegol and command#
When word came that Darth Sidious had returned, Finn joined Rey, Poe, and Chewbacca in the search for a Sith wayfinder, traveling to Pasaana and beyond. In the final campaign, after the death of General Leia Organa, Poe Dameron promoted Finn to co-general, and together they led the Resistance assault on Exegol. With the arrival of Lando Calrissian's Citizens' Fleet, the Resistance broke the Sith Eternal's fleet, and Finn shared in the victory that ended the war.
