Niflheim

the realm of fog

Niflheim was one of the Nine Realms of the World Tree, a frozen world of fog, ice, and endless mist. Once cursed into a poisonous fog by the Dwarf alchemist Ivaldi, it later returned to its frigid state and held a secret prison of Odin.

By Joe Garratt

Niflheim, also called Niflheimr, was one of the Nine Realms of the World Tree, known as the Realm of Fog. It was largely a place of endless snow, wind, ice, and mist, and one of the two primordial realms whose meeting with the fire of Muspelheim gave rise to creation. Its mist was once cursed into a deadly fog around the workshop of the Dwarf alchemist Ivaldi, before returning to its original frigid state. Kratos and Freya later found the true Tyr imprisoned within it.

A frozen world of mist#

Before its mist was cursed, Niflheim was a land of cold and darkness where clouds covered bluish skies and fog shrouded fields and mountains of ice. The only known plant able to grow there was the Raven Tree, a giant tree whose trunk was sheathed in massive ice crystals, and the closest things to animal life were the souls of Odin's ravens that roosted in its branches. Among the canyons of the Mist Fields lay the scattered bones of Audumbla, the primordial cow, alongside Nordic stone statues half buried in snow.

As one of the two primordial realms, Niflheim was the world of cold whose mist met the fire of Muspelheim in the void of Ginnungagap to spark the dawn of creation. By later ages its endless ice had given way in places to fog, much as Muspelheim's fire had cooled.

Ivaldi and the cursed fog#

At some point an ambitious Dwarf alchemist named Ivaldi settled a workshop in the land of mist and found a way to harness the frosty power of Niflheim, creating works of marvel that shocked the realms of men and gods alike. Odin came to see Ivaldi's creations as a threat to his power and intervened. The Dwarf retaliated in fury, but in doing so meddled with forces he should not have, cursing the mist within and around his workshop into a poisonous, foul smelling fog that claimed him as its first victim.

This fatal mist could be avoided at higher altitudes, and armor constructed from Ivaldi's creations could prolong the time one might breathe within it. When Fimbulwinter was triggered and altered the environment of all the realms, the cursed mist disappeared and Niflheim returned to its original frigid state.

The prison of Tyr#

After Ragnarök, the remnants of Asgard fell apart and scattered across all the realms, including Niflheim. Kratos and Freya ventured into the realm and found the icy ravens, and after solving its riddles learned of the Raven Keeper, who had served Odin by keeping the ravens as his spies. Within a crashed Aesir prison wreckage they discovered the true Tyr, the Norse God of War whom Odin had held captive all along, and freed him from his cell.
