What Happened to Kratos's Daughter?

Kratos killed his daughter Calliope by accident, in a temple Ares tricked him into raiding. Her soul went to Elysium, where Kratos found her years later and had to leave her again to save the world. Here is her whole story, from Sparta to Valhalla.

By Joe Garratt

Kratos's daughter, Calliope, was killed by Kratos himself. While he served Ares, he raided a village of Athena's followers and cut down everyone in its temple. Calliope and her mother Lysandra were among the dead, because Ares had secretly put them there. Her soul went on to the Elysium Fields, where Kratos found her again years later, and lost her a second time. (God of War (2005); God of War: Chains of Olympus)

Calliope's life in Sparta#

Calliope was the only child of Kratos and his first wife, Lysandra, and she grew up in Sparta while her father was away at war. Kratos carved her a small wooden flute, and the tune she played on it is the music he hears again years later. (God of War: Chains of Olympus; God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)

The 2010 comic series adds a story the games don't tell. In it, Calliope was born sick, and Spartan law would have had her killed. Kratos went on a quest for the healing elixir Ambrosia, came back in time, and cured her. That is comic material only; no game shows it. (God of War (2010 comic))

How she died#

Facing defeat in battle, Kratos swore himself to Ares in return for victory, and from then on he raided across Greece in the god's name. One night he attacked a village whose people worshipped Athena and slaughtered everyone in its temple. When the frenzy lifted he saw that two of the dead were his wife and daughter, whom he had left at home. (God of War (2005))

Ares had brought them there so that Kratos would kill them. In their last fight he tells Kratos that it was meant to make him the perfect warrior. The village oracle cursed Kratos to wear their ashes on his skin, which is why he is white and why he is called the Ghost of Sparta. The question of why Kratos killed his family has its own page. (God of War (2005))

Calliope in Elysium#

Calliope was not left among the ordinary dead. She was allowed into the Elysium Fields, at the foot of the Pillar of the World, and she played her flute on a dock beside the River Styx near the Temple of Persephone. (God of War: Chains of Olympus)

In Chains of Olympus, the sun god Helios has been taken from the sky, and the dream god Morpheus spreads his darkness over the land. Through that darkness Kratos hears a melody he knows. He follows it into the Underworld, sees Calliope on the temple dock, and chases after her. To enter Elysium he has to give up his weapons, his powers and his sins. He does it without hesitating, and father and daughter are together again. (God of War: Chains of Olympus)

It doesn't last. Persephone reveals that she means to use the Titan Atlas to destroy the Pillar of the World, which would wipe out the world, Olympus and Elysium with it. Calliope would die a second time. To stop it, Kratos pushes his daughter away and takes back his power by killing the souls of Elysium in front of her. She is left behind in tears as he goes to defeat Persephone and chain Atlas beneath the world. That is the last time he sees her. (God of War: Chains of Olympus)

After Greece#

Calliope keeps coming back in Kratos's mind. In the first game, Ares traps him in a vision of the night at the temple and kills his family again in front of him. In God of War III, close to death in the final fight with Zeus, Kratos meets Lysandra and Calliope inside his own mind, embraces them and forgives himself. The same game has a note from Calliope near the Three Judges of the Underworld. She remembers the fire and the screaming, asks why her father didn't protect them, and says the Judges have told her she must go on to Elysium. (God of War (2005); God of War III)

In the Norse saga, Kratos keeps her story to himself for a long time. In Ragnarök, when Freya tells him in Vanaheim that he can't know what it is to lose a child, he answers that he had a daughter, Calliope, and tells her how she died. (God of War Ragnarök)

In Valhalla, Kratos comes across the flute he made for her. He tells Mimir about finding her in Elysium and having to leave. For years afterwards, he says, he regretted it, and would have let the world end for a few more hours with her. That feeling, and her song, only faded after he met Faye. He still hopes Calliope found peace. (God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)

Is Calliope still in Elysium?#

The games never say. Elysium is last seen in Chains of Olympus, and nothing later shows what happened to it, or to her, when Kratos brought down Olympus. Our reading is that the series leaves it open on purpose. Kratos's last word on her in Valhalla is a hope, not a fact, and that uncertainty is part of what he carries. (God of War: Chains of Olympus; God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla)

For her full profile, see Calliope. For both of Kratos's marriages, see Kratos's wives. (God of War (2005); God of War: Chains of Olympus)

Frequently asked questions

What was the name of Kratos's daughter?
Calliope. She was his daughter with his first wife, Lysandra, and grew up in Sparta. Kratos later had a son, Atreus, with his second wife, Faye.
Did Kratos kill Calliope on purpose?
No. Ares moved Lysandra and Calliope into a temple of Athena in a village Kratos was raiding, and Kratos killed everyone inside before he saw who they were. Ares wanted to cut the last human ties of his servant.
Does Kratos see Calliope again?
Yes, in God of War: Chains of Olympus. He finds her in the Elysium Fields and gives up his powers to stay with her, but has to leave when Persephone tries to destroy the Pillar of the World, which would have killed Calliope a second time.
Does Atreus know about Calliope?
The games never show Kratos telling Atreus about her. In Ragnarök he tells Freya, and in Valhalla he talks about her with Mimir.
