The results explained#

Every colour below comes from our guide to lightsaber colour meanings, which covers both Canon and Legends in full.

Blue#

In Legends, the Jedi historian Dorak tells Revan that Guardians use blue crystals, and the Guardians were the school that focused on combat and faced threats directly. (Knights of the Old Republic; The Jedi Path) By the Clone Wars blue had become the most common blade in the order, partly because Ilum produced blue and green almost exclusively. Canon has never drawn a hard line between blue and green, but blue is the default Jedi weapon there too, from Obi-Wan Kenobi to the Skywalker saber. (The Rise of Skywalker)

Green#

Green was the colour of the Jedi Consulars, who spent their time contemplating the Force and preferred diplomacy and planning to fighting. (Knights of the Old Republic; The Jedi Path) They weren't soft, though. Consulars trained with the lightsaber to a Guardian's level and often beyond, and their deeper link to the Force could make them the better duellist. (The Jedi Path) In Canon, Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda both carried green. (The Phantom Menace; The Clone Wars)

Yellow#

Dorak describes the Sentinel as the Jedi who ferrets out deceit and injustice and drags it into the open. (Knights of the Old Republic) Sentinels often lived away from the Temple in communities across the galaxy, and many were experts in technology or medicine. (The Jedi Path) The Jedi Temple Guards carried yellow pikes handed down from earlier guards, and in Canon Rey ignited a yellow blade at the end of the Skywalker saga. (The Clone Wars; The Rise of Skywalker)

Purple#

Purple belongs to Mace Windu, who fought with Vaapad, a form that let him channel his opponent's dark energy and his own back into the fight. (Shatterpoint) The only other known master of the style, Sora Bulq, couldn't handle it and ended up serving Dooku. (Shatterpoint) That's why purple reads as a Jedi who uses the dark side's edge without ever falling.

Red#

Red is the colour of the Sith. In Canon, a Sith takes a kyber crystal, usually from a Jedi they've killed, and pours rage, hate, fear and pain into it until it bleeds. (Darth Vader) The crystals are full of light side energy and fight back, and Vader's first attempt threw him into visions urging him to come home. (Darth Vader)

White#

Ahsoka Tano built her white lightsabers around two crystals taken from the Inquisitor known as the Sixth Brother, purifying them of the taint that bleeding left behind. (Ahsoka) Freeing a crystal from the dark side without handing it back to the Jedi is a statement of independence from both orders. Ahsoka never uses the dark side, so white is better read as the light side without the Jedi Order's rules attached. (Ahsoka)

Orange#

Orange reached Canon through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and is still exceedingly rare in both continuities. (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) No official source attaches a meaning to it, but the usual fan reading is that orange marks Force users who seek peace like the Consulars while spending much more time on the front lines, working through negotiation rather than meditation. Some orange blades have a less flattering story, which we cover in why orange lightsabers are weak.

Black (the Darksaber)#

The Darksaber was said to be forged by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian in the Jedi Order, and it became the symbol of leadership for House Vizsla and later Death Watch. (The Clone Wars) Mandalorian custom says it can only be claimed by beating its owner in combat. Pre Vizsla carried it through the Clone Wars until Maul took it from him. (The Clone Wars)

Frequently asked questions

How does the lightsaber colour quiz work?
Each of the ten answers counts towards one of eight colours, and whichever colour you pick most often is your result. Every colour turns up five times across the quiz, so none of them is easier to land than the others.
Where do the colour meanings come from?
Mostly from Legends, where a Jedi historian named Dorak tells Revan that Guardians carry blue, Sentinels yellow and Consulars green. Canon has its own rule, where the kyber crystal changes colour to match the person it bonds with. Our full guide to lightsaber colour meanings covers both.
Can I get the Darksaber?
Yes. Black is one of the eight results, and it stands for the Darksaber, the only black blade in the setting. In Mandalorian custom you have to win it in a fight, so answer like a warrior if you want it.
