Why Are Orange Lightsabers Weak?

Because some of them are not powered by kyber. Kyber has a close cousin called the kohlen crystal, which looks almost identical, sits in a lightsaber the same way, and even resonates in the Force like the real thing. What comes out is an orange blade that is heavily underpowered and struggles to cut through objects, which is how the crystal picked up its nickname: fool's kyber.

The colour nobody quite trusts#

Orange is one of the rarest blade colours in the galaxy, and it carries an odd reputation. It tends to get attached to diplomats rather than duellists, with Plo Koon and Master Yaddle the names most often raised.

That association is a bit softer than it first appears. Plo Koon's saber is yellow in the films and the animated series, and it is only in a handful of the old Legends comics, including The Stark Hyperspace War, Jedi Council: Acts of War and Obsession, that it comes out orange. Yaddle's orange blade is Legends too, alongside a small group of others that includes the ancient Sith Lord Tulak Hord and, oddly, Yoda's own weapon in 5 ABY.

Canon has since produced its own orange saber in Baylan Skoll, whose blade sits alongside Mace Windu's purple and the Jedi Temple Guards' yellow on the short list of unusual colours. So the colour is not restricted to peacemakers, and plenty of orange blades are perfectly normal weapons.

The weakness comes from somewhere else entirely.

Fool's kyber#

A lightsaber is built around a kyber crystal that amplifies the power cell's energy into a plasma blade and holds it in a containment field. Get the crystal right and everything else follows. Get it wrong and you have an expensive torch.

Kohlen crystals are the wrong crystal that passes every check. Their crystalline structure is extremely similar to true kyber. They give off the same vibrations in the Force, which means the usual instinctive test a Jedi would apply does not catch them. They will seat in a hilt and they will ignite.

Qui-Gon Jinn is the one who named them fool's kyber, and the name is exact. This is not a crystal that fails obviously. It is a crystal that fools you right up until the moment you need it to work.

What actually goes wrong#

The blade a kohlen crystal produces is orange and it is low powered, and that second part is the problem.

A lightsaber's entire reputation rests on the fact that it cuts through almost anything. Blast doors, durasteel, bone. That is the weapon. A kohlen blade does not do it. It is ineffective at cutting through objects, which strips out the thing a lightsaber is for and leaves you holding something that still looks lethal and largely is not.

You can see why that would push a wielder towards a diplomatic posture rather than a combat one. If your weapon cannot be relied on to get through a door, talking becomes considerably more attractive.

The one job it was better at#

Here is the twist, and it is the reason kohlen crystals exist in the story at all.

The blackguards had worked out how to use kohlen crystals to build personal energy shields, and those shields were impervious to lightsabers. A standard kyber blade simply would not go through one. It is a rare thing in the galaxy: an off the shelf counter to the most feared weapon in it.

The counter to the counter was the fool's kyber itself. The low powered orange blade, useless against ordinary matter, could cut straight through a kohlen shield. Obi-Wan Kenobi temporarily swapped his own blue kyber crystal out for an orange kohlen crystal for exactly this reason.

So the weak blade is not simply a defective one. It is a specialist tool that happens to be terrible at the general case.

Where blade colour comes from anyway#

Worth clearing up, since the question rests on it.

Colour is a property of the crystal and its relationship with the wielder, not a grading system. Kyber crystals cover a wide spread: blue, green, purple, yellow, magenta, the yellow-green of Ahsoka Tano's shoto, white after purification, and the pink of seeker crystals. Red comes from a specific process the Sith apply rather than from a naturally red stone.

None of that maps onto power. A blue blade is not weaker than a purple one, and by the time of the New Republic you could walk into Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities on Batuu and buy blue, green, purple, yellow, white or red crystals over the counter.

So the idea that a colour tells you how dangerous somebody is does not hold up in general. Kohlen is the exception that keeps the rumour alive, because it is the one case where an unusual colour genuinely does signal a compromised weapon.

The honest answer#

Orange lightsabers are not weak as a category. Colour comes from the crystal and the wielder's connection to it, and an orange blade grown from real kyber behaves like any other blade.

What is weak is kohlen, and kohlen happens to burn orange. The video's framing, that the diplomatic reputation may trace back to the fact that some orange sabers genuinely could not fight, holds up better than it has any right to. If a chunk of the galaxy's orange blades were fool's kyber, then a reputation for talking rather than cutting is not a philosophy. It is a practical assessment of the equipment.

This one is canon, incidentally. Kohlen crystals come from the Disney era rather than the old Expanded Universe, which makes them one of the few genuinely new pieces of lightsaber lore added since 2014.
