Why Did Luke Skywalker Use A Sith Lightsaber Crystal?

Luke Skywalker used a synthetic crystal because he was stuck on Tatooine with no way to reach a world where lightsaber crystals grow naturally. The technique for growing one artificially was a Sith method, energised in a furnace and normally producing a red blade. Luke found the equipment and the instructions in Obi-Wan Kenobi's old hut, used them anyway, and came out with a green crystal.

Jedi got their crystals from planets, and those planets were gone#

For most of the Jedi Order's history, getting a crystal meant going and finding one. From the Seventh Battle of Ruusan right through to the Great Jedi Purge, the Order almost exclusively used Ilum crystals, which came out of the ground either blue or green. That is the whole reason nearly every Jedi in the Republic era carried a blue or a green blade. Adega and the Crystal Cave on Dantooine supplied the rest.

None of that was available to a farm boy hiding on Tatooine after the rise of the Galactic Empire. A Padawan pilgrimage to a frozen crystal world is not something you do quietly when the Empire is hunting the last of the Jedi. The Legends account is blunt about it: Luke built his lightsaber around a synthetic crystal because he had no access to natural crystals on Tatooine.

So he needed another way to make a blade, and the only surviving instructions he had were the ones Obi-Wan Kenobi left behind.

The synth-crystal was a Sith invention#

A synthetic lightsaber crystal, or synth-crystal, is artificial. It is grown rather than found. Ordinarily an artificial crystal is useless in a lightsaber, but the Sith discovered they could produce ones that worked by energising, magnetising and modifying them with the dark side inside special furnaces, which set the crystal glowing in harmonic vibration.

The payoff was real. Synth-crystals produced more powerful blades and were easier to augment than natural ones. The trade-offs were real too: those blades were generally less manoeuvrable and more unstable than blades from natural crystals. Some badly grown ones crackled and sparked, hit harder than normal, and were also far more likely to short out and drop the blade entirely mid-fight.

Because dark siders used them so heavily, red became the Sith's signature colour, and synth-crystals became a Sith marker. Their use among the Jedi was strongly discouraged.

Darth Maul spent four days in a furnace to make his#

The clearest picture of what the process actually involved comes from Darth Maul. Darth Sidious had him use a special compression furnace to grow the four crystals his double-bladed lightsaber needed. Maul worked constantly for several days, going into deep meditation for four of them, using the Force to shape the crystals, keep them free of impurities, and keep himself alive in the blistering heat.

Maul was extremely proud of it. He treated the achievement as proof of Sith superiority over the Jedi. Tellingly, Sidious did not put his later apprentices through the same ordeal.

This is the technique Luke ended up copying. Not the ideology, just the method.

The green blade, and why it is not red#

Here is the part that trips people up. Synth-crystals are usually red because of how they are made, not because red is baked into the physics. They can be produced in any colour through special manipulation of the creation process or of the crystal itself, often through the Force.

The mechanism is described the same way for both Luke and Maul: the maker channels their own Force energy and personality into the crystal as it forms, which makes every synth-crystal unique, colour included. Luke was not a Sith, so what came out of the furnace was not a Sith blade. It was green.

He used designs he found in Kenobi's home on Tatooine to build a weapon similar to his old master's, along with a special furnace in the same hut to prepare the crystal. Before fitting it, he had to imbue the crystal with the Force by meditating on it for days. He did that in Ben Kenobi's home with only R2-D2 for company.

Legends only#

All of this is Legends, and it matters. The synth-crystal origin of Luke's green lightsaber comes from the Expanded Universe, mostly the Shadows of the Empire novel, which fills the gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Current Disney canon does not run this explanation.

It is also worth separating two things people mash together. Not every red lightsaber crystal is synthetic. Red Adegan crystals existed, and Darth Vader used one in a lightsaber at one point. Red crystals also grew naturally in the Crystal Cave on Dantooine, though they turned up in unhatched kinrath eggs rather than in the rock. Colour and origin are separate questions.

The neat part of the Legends version is what it says about Luke. He spent the years after Yavin with no Order, no teacher, and no supply chain. He built his own weapon from an enemy's method and got a Jedi's blade out of it.
