Why Didn't The CIS Make Lightsaber Resistant Battle Droids?

They did build them. The Techno Union produced the C-B3 cortosis battle droid, clad in a material that could turn aside a lightsaber blade and in some cases kill it outright. They were deployed in limited numbers and proved their worth against the Jedi almost immediately. The programme ended because Anakin Skywalker was sent to Metalorn, captured the Techno Union Foreman and destroyed the factory.

Standard battle droids were a joke and everyone knew it#

The premise of the question is sound. Most battle droids were close to useless against a Jedi. Their blaster fire was easy to deflect and their armour was no match for a blade that cut through it like butter. Every Jedi Knight in the Clone Wars spent the war carving through them by the hundred.

The Confederacy of Independent Systems was not oblivious to this. It ran a whole design pipeline through Baktoid Combat Automata, iterating from the OOM-series through the B1, the B2 super battle droid, the B3 ultra battle droid and the E4 baron droid. The C-B3 cortosis battle droid sits in that same family tree.

Cortosis is the counter#

Cortosis is the answer the galaxy already had to energy weapons. Cortosis ore, refined and woven into armour, could withstand blaster bolts and lightsabers, which is exactly what makes cortosis-fortified armour deadly against Jedi. Wrap a droid in it and the single biggest advantage a Jedi has in melee stops applying.

The video's framing is that the material could deflect and in some cases even extinguish the blade of a lightsaber. That is the reputation cortosis carried, and it explains why the Confederacy went to the trouble of mining it at all.

The Jedi Temple raid proved the concept#

The C-B3s did not sit in a warehouse. They were used, and the first serious outing was about as high profile as it gets.

During an assault on Coruscant, Count Dooku and his dark acolyte Trenox infiltrated the capital world with a small force of C-B3 cortosis battle droids and attempted to destroy the Jedi Archives inside the Jedi Temple. They fled once Anakin Skywalker arrived and defeated Trenox, but Dooku got away with at least one holocron.

Think about what that operation required. A Sith Lord walked a squad of droids into the most heavily defended building on the Jedi's home world, in the middle of a war, and got out. The droids worked.

There had been warning signs before that. The Jedi High Council received a report from an informant named Raala Ponchar about a new type of battle droid appearing on Tatooine. Not long after delivering it, Raala disappeared. Anakin was sent to investigate and was promptly captured by Aurra Sing and one of Dooku's dark acolytes, Saato, and imprisoned in Jabba's palace.

Metalorn ended it#

The kill shot came at the source. In the aftermath of both the Tatooine investigation and the attack on Coruscant, the Jedi Council sent Anakin Skywalker to Metalorn to capture Wat Tambor, Foreman of the Techno Union and a high-ranking member of the Separatist Council, and stop the creation of the cortosis battle droid army.

Metalorn was not a random target. It sat in a corridor of Mid Rim industrial worlds in the northern Slice, alongside Saleucami and Quermia, that had declared for the Separatists and formed the core of the Confederacy's industry. The region was known as the Foundry of the Confederacy.

Anakin went through it more or less alone. He defeated the bounty hunter Vandalor, the dark acolyte brothers Karoc and Vinoc, and even a Doppelganger of Dooku. He captured Wat Tambor and destroyed the facility. He is also recorded as having learned Force cloak during the Clone Wars and used it to destroy the cortosis droid factory on Metalorn.

That is one Jedi ending an entire weapons programme in a single operation.

Why the Confederacy never tried again#

Here the video offers the explanation that fills the gap. Palpatine became worried that these droids were too powerful and could turn the war in the Separatists' favour, which would have ruined his plans, so he leaked the location of the C-B3 factory to the Jedi and let Anakin blow it up.

It fits the shape of the war. Sidious was running both sides and needed a conflict that stayed long, expensive and evenly matched long enough to hollow out the Republic. A droid army that could actually kill Jedi at scale is a Separatist victory, and a Separatist victory was never the plan.

Take the leak at face value or not, the underlying logic holds. The Confederacy's leadership answered to Dooku, and Dooku answered to Sidious. Anything that risked winning the war outright had a short life expectancy.

Cortosis droids in canon#

The idea survived the continuity reset in a different form. In Thrawn: Alliances, the Separatists ran a cortosis mine and a droid factory on Mokivj where they manufactured cortosis-armoured B2 super battle droids to fight the Jedi Order. The factory had a second, nastier purpose too: producing clone trooper armour strengthened with a cortosis weave.

That operation also ended with Anakin. He raided the factory alongside Padme Amidala and a Chiss officer named Thrawn, and between them they made sure the Separatists could not keep building them. The mining itself had caused widespread devastation, deforestation and desertification on Mokivj.

Two continuities, the same story. The Confederacy solved the lightsaber problem twice, and both times Anakin Skywalker turned up and unsolved it.
