The crossing by the Toa Inika#
The trip through the Tunnel of DarknessDarknessThe Dark Hunter assigned to shadow The Shadowed One himself, waiting for any sign of weakness in the leader he was prepared to replace, and one of the few Hunters his master openly counted among the most powerful. was more than a physical passage. The seven crossing it faced complete sensory deprivation. The duration of the crossing is not preserved in any account, but it was long enough for silence and uncertainty to take hold. A devourer of light#
The Tunnel of DarknessDarknessThe Dark Hunter assigned to shadow The Shadowed One himself, waiting for any sign of weakness in the leader he was prepared to replace, and one of the few Hunters his master openly counted among the most powerful. was not merely a place without light; it consumed light actively. The distinction matters. NuparuNuparuAn Onu-Matoran engineer from Metru Nui who built the Boxor and rose to become a Toa of Earth despite no warrior destiny.'s reflection on the experience, that he had once thought the tunnel a natural phenomenon doused lightstones and later wondered whether illumination had actually been devoured, captured the shift from passive absence to active consumption.

The tunnel's location along the southern corridor and its timing within the same period suggest a relationship to that line of work, whether as containment, feeding ground, or byproduct.
TakanuvaTakanuvaHidden among the Ta-Matoran as Takua, the disguised Av-Matoran who became Takanuva was the sole Toa of Light produced in the Matoran Universe's full history.'s position within the encounter was distinctive. As the Toa of LightToa of LightThe sole Toa wielding the Element of Light through the Avohkii mask, singular and feared by Makuta itself., his presence would have disrupted a standard shadow field. Inside the tunnel, his element was a liability rather than a remedy. The reversal indicates that the passage was configured to consume his specific output, or at least to recognize it as primary sustenance. That the party crossed at all suggests the tunnel released them rather than failed to hold them.

Conflicting accounts#
The nature of the Tunnel of DarknessDarknessThe Dark Hunter assigned to shadow The Shadowed One himself, waiting for any sign of weakness in the leader he was prepared to replace, and one of the few Hunters his master openly counted among the most powerful. sits unresolved across surviving accounts of the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control.. NuparuNuparuAn Onu-Matoran engineer from Metru Nui who built the Boxor and rose to become a Toa of Earth despite no warrior destiny.'s recorded suspicion, that the tunnel was not a natural absence of light but something active that might devour illumination, was preserved in the same words quoted above. The statement suggests sentience, or at least a reactive property built into the tunnel's structure.
No further account confirms or expands on this implication. Position in the larger geography#
The Tunnel of DarknessDarknessThe Dark Hunter assigned to shadow The Shadowed One himself, waiting for any sign of weakness in the leader he was prepared to replace, and one of the few Hunters his master openly counted among the most powerful. was both a physical obstacle and a boundary. NuparuNuparuAn Onu-Matoran engineer from Metru Nui who built the Boxor and rose to become a Toa of Earth despite no warrior destiny.'s reflection captured the shift: the tunnel did not block light, it consumed it. That was a property of the environment rather than of its inhabitants.
The tunnel worked as a slow corruption of order by shadow. TeridaxTeridaxTeridax orchestrated a thousand-year scheme that ended with him occupying the Great Spirit Robot itself before his death on Bara Magna.'s influence spread through deception and infiltration rather than open assault, and the tunnel did not announce itself with fire and violence but erased light by degrees. Its position between Metru NuiMetru NuiThe city beneath Mata Nui functions as the Great Spirit's brain, housing the Matoran whose labor keeps the god alive. and KarzahniKarzahniA region of the Matoran Universe built by the Great Beings as a Matoran repair facility, ruined by the failures of its overseer., two centres of authority within the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control., placed it as a boundary marker between orders rather than a simple geographic feature. Continuing significance#
The Tunnel of DarknessDarknessThe Dark Hunter assigned to shadow The Shadowed One himself, waiting for any sign of weakness in the leader he was prepared to replace, and one of the few Hunters his master openly counted among the most powerful. reframed shadow within the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control.. Earlier encounters with darkness had presented shadow as absence; the tunnel demonstrated that shadow could act as a hungry process. The shift was small in wording but large in implication, and it altered the understanding of what Brotherhood of MakutaThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. operations could accomplish through environmental manipulation alone.
The tunnel never reappeared directly in later accounts, but the same principles surfaced elsewhere. Shadow in the events recorded in The Yesterday QuestThe Yesterday QuestThe unfinished post-Reformation serial that sent a hand-picked team of three Toa and the Glatorian Gelu into the unmapped jungles of Bota Magna to find the Great Beings, intercept the awakening of Marendar, and uncover the Great Being who had hidden inside the Matoran Universe for a hundred thousand years. carried a similar quality of suffocating silence and light-repelling surfaces, suggesting that the underlying methods remained in use after Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna.'s reign ended.
The passage marked a transition point in the Toa InikaToa Inika and Toa MahriSix ordinary Matoran transformed by lightning from the Red Star into heroes who ultimately revived the Great Spirit itself.'s journey south, and a benchmark for how environmental conditions in the southern reaches of the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control. could be made hostile to even fundamental properties of the universe's normal operation. Frequently asked questions
- What was the Tunnel of Darkness?
- The Tunnel of Darkness was a lightless passage cutting through the sea floor south of Metru Nui, along the submerged route between that city and Karzahni. Lightstones carried into it failed completely on crossing its threshold.
- What made the Tunnel of Darkness different from ordinary darkness?
- Rather than merely blocking light, the tunnel consumed it, draining lightstones on contact so they went black and cold as if drained. Nuparu later reflected that he had first assumed it was a natural phenomenon that doused lightstones, then came to suspect that all illumination within it had been actively devoured.
- Who crossed the Tunnel of Darkness?
- Jaller, Hahli, Nuparu, Hewkii, Kongu, Matoro, and Takanuva crossed the tunnel during their journey toward Voya Nui. The crossing left them in complete sensory deprivation, unable to see one another or any hazard.
- Why was the Tunnel of Darkness dangerous to Takanuva?
- As the Toa of Light, Takanuva found the environment physically hostile, his elemental nature in direct opposition to the process driving the tunnel. Inside the passage his element was a liability rather than a remedy, and his presence would have disrupted a standard shadow field.
- Was the Tunnel of Darkness connected to the Brotherhood of Makuta?
- Its location along the route to Karzahni and the involvement of Makuta Icarax in that region suggest a connection to Brotherhood operations, though the evidence is indirect. The closest known analogue was the Shadow Leech developed by Mutran and Tridax to drain light, and no surviving account confirms the tunnel as sentient or altered.
