Bunker: fortified strongpoint of the terrans

The bunker was a low domed terran defensive structure, plated in paristeel or neosteel and pierced by weapon ports on every side. Soldiers called them battlefield coffins for their ubiquity and lack of amenities, yet the squat shelters anchored terran lines from the Confederacy through the wars of the Dominion.

The bunker was a terran defensive structure, a low domed fortification that guarded bases and chokepoints across the Koprulu sector from the days of the Terran Confederacy through the wars of the Terran Dominion. Plated in paristeel or neosteel and pierced by weapon ports on every side, a bunker sheltered a small team of infantry, most often marines, and let them hold ground against enemies as relentless as the zerg. The soldiers who crewed them knew the structures by a bleaker name, "battlefield coffins", earned by their ubiquity and their complete lack of amenities.

Design and construction#

The bunker was built for one purpose, which was to let a handful of soldiers hold a piece of ground against a much larger force and survive the attempt. The structure took the form of a low dome, its shell constructed with paristeel or neosteel plating. It could be raised almost anywhere, since the manufacturing processes involved were standard for the SCVs that built every other terran field structure, and once erected the armor plating made the finished bunker very difficult to take apart. What went up quickly did not come down easily, and abandoned bunkers tended to outlast the garrisons, the battles, and sometimes the colonies they had been built to defend.

A bunker typically accommodated four individuals, though it was not strictly limited to that number. Weapon ports were cut into all sides of the dome, with ammunition racks mounted above them, so that a small garrison could put fire onto every approach at once without exposing themselves. The only way in or out was a single hatch at the rear. That arrangement made the structure a fortress in miniature, but it also explained the nickname that followed the design across the sector. A sealed metal dome with one exit, no comforts, and enemies on all sides was, in the estimation of the infantry who served in them, less a fort than a coffin with firing ports.

The garrisons themselves were drawn from the whole range of terran infantry. Marines were the most common occupants, joined by firebats and medics, and in later years by marauders and reapers. In an emergency even civilians could crowd inside the armored shell, which made bunkers a refuge of last resort on colony worlds when the zerg came.

Refinements of the Second Great War#

The bunker's basic form changed little over the decades, but the Second Great War brought a burst of refinement to the old design. Wolfe Industries sold an improved bunker firing port fitted with a magnetic rail, which increased the muzzle speed of projectiles fired through it, turning the same rifles into harder hitting weapons the moment their owners stepped inside.

Raynor's Raiders, the rebel force under Jim Raynor, developed their own upgrades during the war, and both borrowed openly from the enemy. The shrike turret added an automated gun to the bunker's roof, a design based on the zerg spore crawler, so that the structure could fight even when its garrison was occupied elsewhere. A second upgrade sheathed the exterior in an armored carapace modeled on the ultralisk, wrapping Confederate era engineering in a layer of imitation zerg resilience.

The Dominion pursued its own improvements. The next generation of Dominion bunkers was engineered to withstand the full weight of an ultralisk, the largest living siege engine the zerg could bring to a battlefield. More welcome, from the perspective of the men and women stationed inside, the new bunkers were designed with chairs, a change that delighted the marines who had spent years crewing the old models standing up. Other forces adapted the structure to their environments rather than their comfort: the Knights of Tyrador supercooled their bunkers so the garrisons could endure tropical climates.

Bunker Complex 3847 and the Battle of Scenic#

Among the Confederate military bases scattered across Mar Sara stood Bunker Complex 3847, known to the soldiers who served there as "Scenic". In the final days of 2499, with the zerg loose on the planet, the complex was abandoned under circumstances that were never explained to the troops later sent back to it.

A Confederate marine platoon under Lieutenant L.Z. Breanne, whose ranks included Private Ardo Melnikov, was briefed to support the Confederate evacuation at Bunker Complex 3847, to reconnoiter for zerg activity, and to "pick up a little bauble that command lost on the way." The platoon boarded the dropship Valkyrie Vixen and flew out to the complex, where the squads swept the surrounding ground and found it riddled with zerg tunnels; Melnikov himself fell down a zerg shaft and lost contact with his squad. The platoon recovered the mysterious box it had been sent for, along with a captured rebel operator, but paid for the prize on the retreat, losing half its number as the zerg hounded them back toward the complex. The Confederacy then tried to erase the survivors and the box together with a tactical nuclear strike. The attempt failed, and the platoon, initially unaware it had been marked for death, took shelter in the strangely deserted bunker complex.

There the survivors made their choice. The device they had recovered could lure flying zerg toward whoever activated it, which meant it could draw the swarm onto the complex instead of the nearby city, delaying the zerg long enough for the city to be evacuated. The platoon switched it on. In the hour and a half before the zerg arrived, they transformed Bunker Complex 3847 into a defensive death trap, and when the swarm came they fought a battle to the death inside it, holding the zerg as long as they could. The complex, like the rest of Confederate Mar Sara, did not survive the planet's later purification, but the stand at Scenic bought the time it was meant to buy.

Bunkers across the sector#

The bunker's role as a shelter of last resort recurred throughout the sector's recorded history. When a zerg attack wiped out a party of colonists whose defensive drills failed to charge in time, the Kusinis twins survived by taking refuge in a solar-flare bunker. Believing themselves the last people left alive, they broadcast messages for help over several months, never knowing that two other survivors were hiding elsewhere on the same world.

Even the protoss turned to such a shelter at the climax of the war against Amon. On Aiur, after holding off the might of the Golden Armada, the hybrid, and Amon's brood, the Daelaam retreated into the bunker protecting the Keystone and waited for the artifact to activate. From within that shelter they saw Amon's influence on the Khala stripped away.

The design also branched into distinct variants. The battle bunker enlarged the basic strongpoint, while the supply bunker was a Terran Dominion design that combined a supply depot with a bunker and could be dropped from orbit with troopers already inside. Grimmer than either was the infested bunker, a terran shell overtaken and repurposed by zerg infestation, its familiar dome turned against the species that built it. Through every variation the core idea persisted unchanged from the earliest Confederate installations: a sealed dome, a few soldiers, and the stubborn refusal to give up a piece of ground.
