Frequently asked questions

What is an Ussal crab?
The Ussal crab was a domesticated Rahi used as a riding and cargo animal throughout Onu-Metru, the Archives district of Metru Nui, and later by the Onu-Matoran of Onu-Koro on the island of Mata Nui. It pulled carts, carried riders, and hauled components between the assembler's villages and the foundries.
What did Ussal crabs look like and how were they used?
The Ussal was a large crab-form Rahi that moved on multiple legs and had a hard upper shell, suited to rough ground and uneven terrain. It could carry a rider on its back and drag a loaded cart behind it, and standard Ussals were tractable enough to be trained from a young age.
Who was Pewku?
Pewku was the most famous individual Ussal in the historical record. Originally Orkahm's preferred mount in Metru Nui, Pewku was relocated to Mata Nui after the Great Cataclysm and later belonged successively to Takua, Jaller, and Midak.
What was the Onu-Koro Ussalry?
The Ussalry was a mounted force constructed by Onu-Koro using domesticated Ussals as mounts, combining transportation, defence, and ceremonial duties within the Onu-Wahi tunnels. Its captain, Onepu, was the most accomplished rider on the island and won the Great Ussal Race five times in a row.
What was the mutated Ussal in the Archives?
A separate mutated variant of the species lived within the Archives of Onu-Metru, grown to many times the size of the standard form, with degraded eyesight and acute hearing to compensate. The Toa Metru Whenua and Nuju encountered it while searching for the Onu-Metru Great Disk and escaped by exploiting its hearing through the high-frequency sound of Whenua's Earthshock Drills.
